How can I use my gifts for God?

The gifts we receive tell a lot on who gifts them to us. This also applies to God – the gifts He gives are good and nothing but good.

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows." (James 1:17)

God gives the best gifts

A gift can be a natural ability or talent. It’s not hard to pick out the things we are naturally skilled to do, things that come naturally to us and things we enjoy doing and do with ease. Singing, dancing, writing, cooking, administration, you name it! They all come from God. God created the heavens and the earth; it would be an injustice for such a creative God to create His people without an ounce of that same creativity engraved in us.

The bible tells us we were created in His image; that image is His spirit, but more so, we are as He is in the world, possessing the qualities He portrays. We were not made empty; we were not made empty canvasses with no correlation to our maker. If you are gifted in an area, God made you like that for a reason.

God has given us these beautiful gifts and what better way to honor those gifts than to give them back to him?

“So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11)

How can we use our gifts for God?

Simply use them to bring people to God. As Christians, we know the main purpose of our existence is to display Gods goodness and point people to Him, making them disciples. (Matthew 28:19). So, using your gifts for God could be using your gift of singing in church, leading worship, counselling others, writing stories that point people to Christ, or interpretative dance even. All good gifts from God can be used to His glory.

And most importantly, as Christian creatives, we don’t always have to slap the word ‘God’ in everything we do for it to glorify God, we can glorify God by the message and spirit behind whatever we do, is it to edify? Will it spread love? Will the hearers and viewers be blessed by it? What emotions are sprung up in the hearts of people by it? The bible urges us to use our gifts to edify the body of Christ, which indirectly is using those gifts for God.

In all this, whatever you commit to God, He will bless – “you can glorify God with almost anything. If you surrender your work to God, He will use it for His kingdom.” (Colossians 3:23–24)

I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember and everyone seems to think I’m good at it lol!  I hope to someday publish a book or two in my lifetime. My inspiration definitely comes from God who has given me the grace to use my gifts for His glory.
