Am I surrounded by the right people?
God shows us how important it is to surround yourself with the right people and the right company. It is not a statement but a fact. He saw the way in which humans were easily influenced by those around them. This is shown from the very beginning with Adam and Eve, and as far as Jesus with the company he kept here on earth.
At some point in our lives, whether conscious or not, we can be influenced to do something in the spur of the moment or to ‘fit in’ with certain friendship groups. If anything, the lockdown has shown me how valuable the idea of Christian community is. Not only was I given the opportunity to connect with like minded people; I was given the chance to surround myself with a group that loved God and aligned themselves with His word.
As Christians we need to be mindful and attentive to what kind of company we are exposing ourselves to. Is it a community of laziness? A community of unmotivated people? Or is it a community that pushes you to grow closer to God? These are few of the things that can impact your life by just being around these types of individuals.
In 1 Corinthians 15:33, the bible says: “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals.”
God warns us to be attentive. He does not want us to be obtain bad traits from the company we keep. He asks us to be wise. And that is what God showed me through my church community during the lockdown. I saw the youth of all ages come together and encourage one another to grow closer to God; through daily prayer we become connected and interwoven together through our love for God. He is the centre that glues us together. A community that will boost you when you are feeling low or discouraged is essential as it is a great comfort to know someone out there prays and cares for you. And it allows you to keep that fire burning inside.
How do I find my community?
Seek wisdom from God and do not be afraid of putting yourself out there in terms of finding new people/groups. You would be surprised with the Christian community that are out there and available. Set yourself a list of values you would like to see in your community and believe God will align you to the right people if you believe and have faith.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not to your own understanding.”(Proverbs 3:5).
Community is all about being there for one another and building each other spiritually. I pray you may find your community that lifts and pushes you to grow closer to God.
